Jeff Fisher out as Titans' head coach
As the regular season ended, it seemed like either Jeff Fisher or Vince Young
wouldn't be returning to the Tennessee Titans for the 2011 campaign. Now it appears likely neither will be returning and, somewhat surprisingly, it's Fisher who is the first to go. The team confirmed Thursday that it has decided to let go of the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL and the only head coach the Titans have ever known.
"The Tennessee Titans and Jeff Fisher have agreed to part ways and Fisher will no longer be the head coach of the team," the team stated.
Fisher became the head coach of the Titans in 1994 when that franchise was still known as the Houston Oilers before it set up shop in Nashville prior to the 1997 season. Fisher had a 142-120 record in the regular season and 5-6 in the playoffs. His biggest success came in 1999 as he directed the 13-3 Titans to Super Bowl XXIV.
Fantasy Analysis:
Titans owner Bud Adams said shortly after the season that Fisher would be returning as coach while Young would be gone. That's certainly changed and who knows where the Titans go from here. I don't think Young will be back, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me if Adams, who is a big-time Young supporter, has a change of heart. How's that for riding the fence? Fisher will land somewhere quickly, maybe as a defensive coordinator. Offensive line coach Mike Munchak appears to be the leading candidate to replace Fisher. The Titans are a team in disarray right now.
