Hernia, finger surgeries for Ravens' Derrick Mason on Wednesday
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason
hasn't yet decided if he will play a 15th season in the NFL, but the odds of that happening probably went up Wednesday. Mason decided to undergo surgeries for a sports hernia and a broken pinky finger on his right hand. He should be recovered in time for offseason workouts. Mason caught 61 passes for 802 yards and seven touchdowns in his age-36 season. He turned 37 on Jan. 17.
Fantasy Analysis:
The belief is if Mason was really going to call it a career, he would have waited to have these operations. Mason played the "will I, won't I" retirement game last year and didn't make his decision to return until late in the summer. The Ravens will probably need a quicker answer from Mason this time around as they look to upgrade their receiving corps. He's scheduled to earn $4.5 million in 2011. Mason's 2010 stats aren't great numbers for fantasy and after turning back the clock in so many of his recent seasons, it looks like he is finally running into Father Time. His catches and yards have declined in each of the past three seasons and those 61 catches from this season were his lowest since 1999. The touchdown total is still pretty healthy, but Mason is just a WR3 in 12-team leagues and one with no upside potential.
