Auburn's Nick Fairley going to NFL
Not many people were surprised that Auburn's Cam Newton declared for the NFL Draft on Thursday. I'm sure less people were surprised Friday when his teammate Nick Fairley said that he will also forgo his senior season and head to the NFL. "I was thinking, 'What more could I accomplish my senior year?'" Fairley said during a press conference. Fairley was voted the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and won the 2010 Lombardi Award, honoring the best defensive lineman or linebacker in college football. He led the SEC with 24 tackles for a loss and set a school single-season record with 11.5 sacks. Fairley ended his college career on a high note as he had a sack, three tackles for a loss and a forced fumble to help the Tigers claim the national championship Monday night. He was named the game's defensive MVP.
Fantasy Analysis:
Fairley was so good in that title game, there was some speculation that Oregon's offensive line actually forgot to block him on a number of plays. Fairley made himself into a clear-cut top-five pick in 2010. He will have to answer questions about maturity, but there's no doubt that the defensive tackle was physically dominant this season. Many see him as a clone of Warren Sapp and he could be the Carolina Panthers' pick at No. 1. New Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said he will maintain the team's 4-3 defense scheme; Fairley would be a great fit.
