49ers' Alex Smith to start, Willis out

Despite the recent turmoil in San Francisco due to the firing of head coach Mike Singletary, there is still one game left to be played. Quarterback Alex Smith has been named the starter by interim head coach Jim Tomsula. The Niners have missed the playoffs for the last eight years. For any IDP leagues, it's noteworthy to mention that middle linebacker Patrick Willis @PatrickWillis52 will miss the season finale because of a surgery on his broken right hand. Willis has played with a cast on his hand but this will be his first missed game of his four-year career. Willis leads the team with 128 tackles, six sacks and two forced fumbles.

Fantasy Analysis:

The 49ers' decision to start Alex Smith doesn't have much of a fantasy impact. Anybody fighting for their fantasy championship likely wasn't being carried by Troy Smith. But any IDP league has a team with Patrick Willis on it. Willis is always amongst the league leaders at tackles and consequently, one of the top IDP players in the NFL. For those needing a replacement, first look for a game where both teams have something to play for. From that, pick up the leading tackler from either team, preferrably one that is playing against a team that runs the ball a lot. Tackles are an inconsistent stat for most defensive players but the guys who get a lot of tackles usually do so with some regularity.
