Chiefs' Cassel misses practice due to illness
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel missed practice on Wednesday due to an undisclosed illness. According to head coach Todd Haley, the nature of Cassel's illness wouldn't be discussed, nor would his availability for Sunday's game at San Diego. The Chiefs currently hold a two-game lead in the AFC West, the largest divisional lead in the NFL. Haley added that it is merely a coincidence that practice squad quarterback Tyler Palko was promoted to the active roster today. Cassel is having a great year in 2010. He has passed for 2,503 yards, 23 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He is also fifth in the league in passer rating (98.4).
UPDATE: Cassel had an appendectomy this morning. More specifically, a laparoscopic surgery which is less invasive. Status for Sunday still unknown
Fantasy Analysis:
It all seems a little too hush-hush for Kansas City, coach Haley and Cassel. There are any number of possibilities here. He could be taking an extra day to rest, nagging injury, a day off, or D) all of the above. In any case, as long as the Chiefs are able to run the ball with two healthy backs, it's tough for any team to defend against them. Cassel hasn't thrown a pick since Week 9 and has thrown 11 touchdowns in those four games. With Kansas City still fighting to secure their place in the playoffs, unless news comes out that Cassel is out, there's no reason to panic this early in the week. Not yet at least.
UPDATE: For Cassel owners, if he's the only reliable quarterback you have, time to make something happen on the waiver wire since it seems crazy to think Cassel could play just days after having a rather serious medical problem.
