Jets sign WR Laveranues Coles
According to The Star-Ledger, the New York Jets will sign veteran wideout Laveranues Coles sometime Sunday, just in time for their Monday night game against the New England Patriots. Coles will fill the open roster spot left behind by safety Jim Leonhard who was placed on the injured reserve list on Sunday after breaking his right leg in practice. Coles was released by the Jets in August and played during their preseason games. "Unless someone gives me an offer I can't refuse, I think I'm done," Coles said after being released. "I have my health and I'm thankful for that. I'll talk to the Jets if they call, but right now I think I'm done."
Fantasy Analysis:
Coles doesn't have any fantasy impact but this is a small boost for quarterback Mark Sanchez. Lining up Coles as a WR3 or WR4 puts a lot of pressure on the safeties and linebackers in underneath coverage. This would allow a lot more man-to-man coverage for a guy like WR Santonio Holmes. Also, being one of the leaders and well-respected guys on the team, having him in the locker room is a big moral boost after losing Leonhard for the rest of the year. The Jets offense needs to play more efficient football, no matter who is on the field or not. Sanchez has limited mistakes but there aren't many big plays in this team's arsenal or gameplan.
