Sources: Vikings' Sidney Rice unlikely to play this season

Chip Scoggins and Judd Zulgad, Vikings beat reporters for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, both said Tuesday they don't think wide receiver Sidney Rice @sidneyrice will play at all this season. Rice has been recovering from hip surgery and is still on the Physically Unable to Perform list, contrary to previous reports. He is a free agent after 2010 and both reporters agree that Rice and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, would much rather have the All-Pro sacrifice this lost season and, per Zulgad, "take the 2009 stats, the fact that he's completely healthy and you shop those" on the open market, rather than run the risk of re-injury this year.

Fantasy Analysis:

This makes a lot of sense and I'm sure Rice has thought about this scenario. While a 2010 comeback could potentially up his value, he would lose a lot of potential money if he suffers a setback with that hip. You know Rice doesn't want that and you certainly know Rosenhaus won't stand for any situation in which he's losing money. Plus, with the Vikings at 3-6 and no signs of a dramatic turnaround present, the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to the impact this season will have on Rice's next contract. Despite the hope that Rice would return during the second half of 2010, it looks like he'll be worthless in fantasy until next season.
