Redskins' McNabb signs five-year extension, worth up to $88 million

Despite the recent off-and-on controversy surround Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb @donovanjmcnabb's status on the team, today he signed a five-year contract extension, worth up to $88 million in total with $40 million guaranteed. This breaking news comes from ESPN's Michael Smith. McNabb turns 34 later this month. This deal comes just two weeks after the mini-controversy of McNabb's benching for Rex Grossman to take over Washington's 2-minute offense. McNabb and the Redskins faces his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, later tonight in Monday Night Football.

Fantasy Analysis:

Well, who say that coming? This is a pretty bold move for the Redskins to say the least. But the do, at the very least, shore up the quarterback position for the foreseeable future. Is McNabb what he once was? Of course not. Is he terrible? Far from it, in fact. The Redskins are 4-4 and with a win tonight put themselves right in the thick of the race for the NFC East division title. Things are certainly better than last year for Washington. The Redskins really need to give McNabb more options on offense with a depleted backfield and a very thin receiving core. But in five years time, they can do a lot via free agency or the draft. I'm trying to remain optimistic but Washington clearly feels they are close to being a serious contender in the NFC. McNabb might've put pressure on ownership to reaffirm their commitment to him after head coach Mike Shanahan benched him, but either way, they are a cellar dweller without McNabb as their signal caller.
