Troy Smith is the 49ers' starting quarterback right now

As always, things could change but if the San Francisco 49ers had to play today, Troy Smith would get his second start in as many games. Head coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that Smith is his starter "as of right now." When asked if Alex Smith has a chance to be the first-stringer instead, the coach said: "If Alex were healthy, I think he'd still be the quarterback." The problem is that Alex Smith isn't healthy. He separated his left shoulder during the Oct. 24 game in Carolina and while he practiced for the first time in two weeks Monday, it was a very little practice with no contact. He hasn't been medically cleared to play and didn't practice Wednesday.

Fantasy Analysis:

Expect Troy Smith to get all the snaps Sunday versus St. Louis. He wasn't a revelation against the Broncos in London two weeks ago, but he certainly kept the Niners in position to win that game. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 196 yards and a score. He ran for a touchdown as well. He was able to find Michael Crabtree @KingCrab15 on that passing TD and while Vernon Davis @VernonDavis85 missed most of the game with an injury, I figure that he'll get plenty of work with Troy Smith in the lineup. The Rams have a pretty good pass defense, but they don't play as well away from home, so Troy Smith isn't a bad option in deep two-QB leagues.
