Ravens' Derrick Mason undergoes finger surgery

Steven Jackson is not alone. Our second story of the week about finger surgery to a fantasy factor concerns Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason @deemason85. The 36-year-old vet said Tuesday that he had a surgical procedure done on his broken right pinkie finger Monday, one that resulted in a pin being inserted in the finger. Mason said Sunday that he expected to have surgery this week and doesn't expect to miss any game action. The Ravens hold their bye in week eight and then return to the field Nov. 7 against the Miami Dolphins. Mason got off to a very slow start this season, but has become a bigger part of the Ravens' passing game of late. He has finished with at least 47 receiving yards in each of the past four games.

Fantasy Analysis:

Mason is still a valuable player in PPR leagues. He's had games of six and eight receptions in two of the past four weeks. But he is nothing more than a fringe No. 3 wide receiver in the deepest of standard leagues. The Ravens, when they're not running the ball, are usually looking toward Anquan Boldin and little else. The Ravens' receivers have a very good fantasy playoff schedule (Houston, New Orleans and Cleveland in weeks 14-16), but it'll be hard to depend on Mason for anything special. And that has nothing to do with his pinkie.
