2007 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
David Clowney, WR, Virginia Tech
David Clowney of Virginia Tech is a guy heading into the NFL surrounded by no hoopla and fanfare, who could eventually develop into a solid No. 2 or No. 3 receiver for a pro team. Clowney enjoyed a solid junior year in Blacksburg as the top pass-catching threat, but he was hampered by injuries last season and inconsistent quarterback play all but ensured he would not be able to put up big numbers. But make no mistake about it-Clowney is a talented fellow. He's only 6-1, 185 pounds, but he is no doubt a speedster (4.36 at the combine). Even if he fails to pan out as a wideout, there is a good chance he will land on his feet as a threat to return kicks. After all, isn't that what his coach at VT, Frank Beamer, is famous for? If Clowney hits the weight room hard, however, he has the speed, agility, and reliable hands to make it as both a kick returner and a receiver and prove to be a steal as either a late first day or early second day pick.
