Troy Smith Scouting Report

When Ohio State got blown out by Florida in the BCS National Championship Game, quarterback Troy Smith lost more than just a big football game. He also lost big money. Playing against the toughest defense he had seen all year, Smith suffered through his worst performance of the season. Sure he was without star receiver Ted Ginn Jr. the entire night, but Smith was still completely underwhelmed. He did not do much to reverse his fortune at the NFL Combine. In fact, he did almost nothing. Smith did not run the 40-yard dash, admitting he came in out of shape and visibly straight off a few too many banquets. Smith did fare better at Ohio State's pro day, but he has still not done anything spectacular since the Michigan game. The 6-1, 215-pound quarterback ran a 4.70, which would have been second among QBs at the combine behind Boise State's Jared Zabransky, but still not as fast as some scouts anticipated. An outstanding athlete, Smith also beat all the combine quarterbacks in both the vertical jump and the broad jump. Smith's arm is also one of his great strengths-literally. It is both strong and very accurate, as he proved both throughout his senior season and at OSU's pro day. He is not the second rounder that he was projected to be prior to the National Championship, but Smith could squeak into the third round. Fourth round, however, is the safe bet.
