2007 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Garrett Wolfe, RB, Northern Illinois
The former Northern Illinois running back burst onto the national scene in the season opener against Ohio State, racking up 285 total yards from scrimmage. At only 5-8 (and that's being generous) and 185 pounds, Wolfe was pretty much a college football phenomenon last year. He put himself squarely in the Heisman race with his performance against the Buckeyes and remained in the hunt until--understandably--he wore down late in the season. However, that was not before he ran all over Buffalo for 263 yards in a game and then ran wild at Ball State to the tune of 353 rushing yards. It's obvious that Wolfe will not come close to anything like that at the next level, as he will be overwhelmed by bigger guys in the NFL. But, Wolfe could emerge as a nice change-of-pace back and should be able to contribute in the return game for any NFL team (think Darren Sproles, former Kansas State running back, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Chargers in 2005). He has been clocked at 4.40 in the 40-yard dash and can probably go even faster. Wolfe will most likely never be a starter in an NFL backfield, but with that kind of explosiveness, he should be an early pick on day two of the draft.
