2014 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Trent Murphy, LB, Stanford
At around 6-foot-6 and 250-plus pounds, Murphy could fit in a couple different positions and schemes. Where he is draft could ultimately push him towards one position over another. Given his bulk, he makes the most sense as a DE from my perspective. He doesn't have the ideal speed to play OLB in any 4-3 scheme and may be a liability in coverage if asked to play OLB in a 3-4. He already has the frame to add another 30 pounds and maybe even play as a 3-4 DE. Hard worker, team mentality.
Reminds me of the 49ers' Justin Smith, except a bit lighter in weight. Just a brute strength guy with a great motor. Can collapse the pocket, outwork his opponent and wear them down. Sound tackler, wraps up well and puts his weight hard on players. Not a sudden or especially agile player. At his best when playing downhill. Excellent against the run and can quickly diagnose the play. Average pass rush moves. Not the sort of guy who will work the edge and beat a tackle with his speed by any means. Can be vulnerable in the open field and beat by fast RBs and TEs.
Murphy's lack of explosive athleticism will likely push him into the late third or fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
