Larry Asante, SS, Nebraska
Larry Asante began his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College playing linebacker. It did not take long for the Nebraska coaching staff to realize that he belonged at the safety spot and Asante immediately flourished at that position. He earned a starting job in the spring and finished the season with an impressive 78 tackles. By his junior year in 2008, Asante was a steadying force in the Cornhuskers' secondary and ranked second on the team in tackles with 67. After starting at strong safety in 2007 and 2008, Asante was expected to be the experienced piece to the Nebraska secondary and he has been just that. Through ten games in 2009 -- all of which Asante has started -- the 6-1 senior has tallied 54 tackles and made his second career interception. Asante is a well balanced strong safety. He does not get a lot of tackles for loss because of the way Nebraska plays defense and he only has two career interceptions. He does have the size to get into the backfield and the speed to keep up with most opposing tight ends in pass coverage, but it is not reflected by his numbers. What Asante does do is tackle and he does it very well.
