Akwasi Owusu-Ansah Scouting Report

Even at Indiana University Pennsylvania, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah had to pay his dues. He spent his first two seasons as a backup and was not much of an impact player. In 2008 he came into his own and became the standout corner for the Crimson Hawks. In that season he totaled eight interceptions and broke up ten passes. Understandably, the opposition threw the other way in 2009. Owusu-Ansah was obviously the most dangerous player on the defensive side of the ball so the opposition avoided him as much as possible and the result was just two interceptions, four pass breakups and 27 tackles for the senior. Owusu-Ansah's ability to help out in run support is the biggest question that remains. He has proven to be a smart player who could thrive in either man or zone coverage schemes or even play free safety in some defenses. His speed shot him up draft boards extremely quickly, although he ran surprisingly slow at the NFL Combine. That was likely due to an injury suffered in November that has kept him out of most of the workouts leading up to the draft. It certainly showed at the combine where he struggled through some of the agility drills. Yet, when he is healthy he can run a 40-yard dash in 4.32 seconds. Normally it takes a great combine for NFL teams to notice a player from a school like IUP, but that is not the case with Owusu-Ansah. He has been on the NFL's radar for a while and his workouts after the combine have confirmed that he is a very talented cornerback who deserves to be drafted in the second or third round.
