2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Zach Follett, OLB, California
Follett is a very athletic outside linebacker prospect from California. He has above average speed and plays sideline to sideline. Follett does lack size, but has the frame to add weight to and bulk up to a better NFL playing weight. He does a good job of diagnosing the play and finding the ball to make the tackle. A very sure tackler, he does a great job in run-support. Follett plays very well in pass coverage and does a good job of reading play-action. Follett has good ball skills and does a good job of batting passes down when he can not intercept them. He is a very good blitzer and has averaged just over 4 sacks per season since arriving at California. He needs to improve his tackling skills in open space, as he has trouble tackling receivers and quicker running backs in the open field. Follett will play better in zone rather than man on man coverage schemes. He does a good job of shedding blockers using his elite upper-body strength, but he needs to improve his pass-rushing moves to be a more effective blitzer in the NFL. Follett will likely be a third or fourth round pick. He has tremendous upside and will contribute immediately on special teams and will develop into an every down linebacker.
