2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Patrick Chung, SS, Oregon
Chung is a 51 game starter for the Oregon Ducks, which means that he has a ton of experience against the best QBs in the nation. He has a good football frame and unlike many safeties prospects, Chung likes to play the run -- tending to come in quickly to support it. He is a very good tackler inside the "box", but loses focus outside of it. Chung reads the quarterback's eyes well and has the speed (he ran an impressive 4.49 40s at the Combine) to be a very good cover man-to-man covering S. However, he does lack fluidity outside, but has good leadership skills. On the negative side, Chung is not a great athlete. He is fast, but does not explode out of his blocks. He tends to loose focus outside the box. His instincts are suspect. He has good range, but loses ground while backpedaling. His lateral movement is also unorthodox. Chung is one of the best five S prospects in this year's draft -- a statement that says more about the overall weakness of the class than about the former Duck pro potential. Nevertheless, Chung does bring good value to the table. He has a good combination of speed and power. A very good tackler with some leadership ability, Chung would be drafted by a team that plays more zone than man to man, deep coverage. He is a mid-to-late third rounder who could play significant minutes in his rookie season.
