George Selvie Scouting Report

In 2006 as a redshirt freshman, George Selvie started all 13 games at right end for South Florida. He tallied 84 tackles, 15 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks. That is not bad at all for a freshman, but it was just a precursor of what was to come. The following year Selvie led the nation with 31.5 tackles-for-loss and ranked second in sacks with 14.5. He also forced three fumbles and even blocked a kick. For his efforts he was named to just about every first team All-American list that exists and won the Bill Willis Award honoring the nation's top defensive lineman. Living up to those numbers was virtually impossible in 2008 and Selvie tallied 15.0 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks. Constantly double-teamed, Selvie still has managed to total 6.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks through seven games in 2009. He has great technique and is physically and fundamentally ready to play in the NFL and could have left a year early and would have likely been a first round pick. He has good footwork, plenty of quickness and never takes a play off. As long as the 2009 season keeps going well, Selvie should be a first day pick. There are a few things NFL teams want to see improvement on from the 6-4, 250 pound Pensacola, Florida product, but his productivity on the field cannot be argued. 1/24 Update: The debate still rages among draft gurus about George Selvie and South Florida teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. Selvie is obviously the more experienced option, but the fact that he finished his senior season with just 3.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles-for-loss has some worried. Yet, most of the time Selvie was double teamed due to his track record and that allowed Pierre-Paul to put up better numbers. In the end, it will come down to the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine; that does not favor Selvie over Pierre-Paul and will likely drop Selvie down to the second or even third round. 3/29 Update: In fact, after Selvie's pedestrian showing at the NFL Combine, he would be lucky to go in the third round. Right now he is probably a fifth or sixth round selection. He is still a good defensive end with plenty of experience and talent, but most NFL teams seem to think that he has hit his ceiling. But picking up a productive end who can immediately step in and be a part of your regular rotation in the fifth round is a steal.
