Juaquin Iglesias Scouting Report

When Juaquin Iglesias was a freshman, Oklahoma did not have much of a passing game. Adrian Peterson rushed for over 1,100 yards that year. But Iglesias still put up decent numbers as a true freshman and ranked third on the team in receiving yards behind Malcolm Kelly (a second round selection in 2008) and Travis Wilson (a third round pick in 2006). During the 2006 season, the 6-0, 204 pound Iglesias was still the third offensive option behind Peterson and Kelly, but he managed to catch 41 passes for 514 yards and a couple of touchdowns. As an upperclassman in 2007, the Sooners' passing game thrived and Iglesias led the team with 68 receptions for 907 yards. That outperformed Kelly during his senior season. In 2008, this is Iglesias' team. But the problem is that Iglesias is a possession receiver, not a tall touchdown scoring machine. At 6-0, he is not going to be a number one receiver in the NFL, but he could emerge as a great slot receiver. Since he is a possession receiver, Iglesias will not likely be a first round draft pick, even though his collegiate production warrants such things. But he could squeeze into the first round (much like Anthony Gonzalez did in 2007). 10/9 Update: Through five games in the 2008 campaign, Iglesias already has as many touchdown receptions as he had through all of 2007. You can be certain that he will end up with more than five this year. The receiver is also averaging an impressive 80.2 yards per game and 17.4 yards per catch. With every passing game Iglesias is looking more and more like a great secondary receiver. As long as the Sooners offense continues to flourish, Iglesias' stock will keep rising. 1/14 Update: Iglesias did end up finishing strong in 2008. He ended the year catching 74 passes for 1,150 yards and ten touchdowns. On a team with such talent, Iglesias was often overlooked. Sam Bradford ended up winning the Heisman and running backs Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray garnered plenty of attention. Even tight end Jermaine Gresham got most of the love in the red zone and caught three more touchdown passes than Iglesias. Even if Iglesias was a little under the radar on his own team, he is still an extremely productive receiver and should be a second or third round pick in April. 3/24 Update: Iglesias put up some good numbers at the NFL Combine. He showed off his impressive quickness and burst of speed and most scouts left pretty happy. Iglesias let those numbers stand during Oklahoma's Pro Day and instead opted to show off his route running ability and his hands. Iglesias did not drop many passes and he has always been a productive (and smart) route runner. Now, he could certainly move into the second round.
