2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Larry English, DE, Northern Illinois
A track and basketball star when he came out of high school, English played as a true freshman in 2004. He then sprained his left ankle and was redshirted for the rest of the season. He did start eight of the nine games he played in 2005 (all at right tackle where he registered 78 tackles, seven of those for losses). He also recorded a sack. English was named to the All Mid American Conference Fist Team squad after a 2006 campaign that saw him making 51 tackles, 17 for losses and a school-record twelve sacks. He also started all of the team's twelve games in 2007, recording 67 tackles, 17 for losses with 10.5 sacks. His actions earned him MCA Most Valuable Player honors. Another fast (4.78) and skillful defensive end from a small school. He most likely would be an outside linebacker at the next level. Has a good frame, although he needs to bulk up. Does not moves well laterally, despite his speed. Awkward hip turning motion. Was manhandled by better competition. Has struggled against physical blockers. Needs better technique and desire. Every game this season is make-or-break for him. English needs to make a quick impression to get into the post season games where he can show his athletic skills. If he is to make it in the NFL, he needs to bulk up rapidly. He is a good athlete who needs tons of coaching -- a very poor man's Terrell Suggs. Because of the weakness of this year's DE class, English would probably be drafted higher than he should.
