Gosder Cherilus, OL, Boston College
The grit behind the glamour of Boston College's quarterback Matt Ryan was his tackle Gosder Cherilus. For four years, Cherilus protected his quarterback amazingly well and Ryan will be the first to credit Cherilus for the success this season of the Eagles' offense. However, he is not just a pass blocking tackle. The Boston College running game thrived under his leadership as well. Coming from O Linemen U, the four year starter has the pedigree, skills, and size to be playing right tackle on Sunday for a long, long time. Cherilus may not be flashy, even for an offensive lineman, but the 6-7, 319-pounder is certainly steady. Cherilus is a big, strong guy and injuries are rarely a problem as he started all 51 games during his collegiate career. The Haitian born Cherilus was named to the All-ACC Second Team for his efforts during his senior season and with a good showing at the combine, he could pass some fellow lineman in this deep class. That deep class could knock Cherilus down a bit in the draft, but the good news is that many teams are in desperate need of a good tackle. Cherilus is a late first-round to early second-round talent, but he may work his way up if teams start jumping on some other tackles early in the draft. 2/27 Update: Cherilus ran a solid 5.21 40 time at the combine. He showed off his quick feet, but the bench press at 24 reps was a little disappointing. He has strong hands, but the teams might shy away from him a little bit because of his overall strength. On tape Cherilus rarely had problems with his strength, but it is a whole new world in the NFL. 3/28 Update: Gosder Cherilus showed surprisingly decent strength during his Pro Day. At the point of attack he looked very good and that may be enough to shoot him into the first round. The New York Giants are one of the teams interested in Cherilus and the last pick of the first round is a very probable place for the Boston College grad to go. 4/18 Update: It still appears that the Giants are thinking about selecting Gosder Cherilus with the last selection of the first round. However, the Giants are not in need of much of anything and they could look in another direction just as easily, especially if there is a better value when their time comes to make a selection. Even if he does not go to the Giants, Cherilus will be off the board early in round two.
