2015 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Jeremy Langford, RB, Michigan State
After bouncing from RB, to DB, to WR, and then back to RB, Langford finally earned the job as Michigan State's starting RB over some more heralded, but younger recruits to begin his redshirt junior season.
Langford ultimately garnered recognition as an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten RB by both the coaches and media in a conference that was absolutely loaded at that position.
Langford was without question Michigan State's bell cow back in a system that relies heavily upon their running game. At one time mentioned as the Spartans' fastest player, Langford was still able to break off the big run against opposing defenses despite beefing up to play RB. His speed and big play ability were confirmed at the Scouting Combine where Langford lead all RB's with a 4.42 time in the 40-yard dash.
A patient runner who takes his time to let his blocks develop, Langford's best attribute is his strength and stamina, as he demonstrated the ability to wear down opposing defenses and then run through and past them late in games. Langford is reliable in pass protection, and as a former receiver has great hands and instincts catching the ball out of the backfield. Despite weighing just 208 pounds, Langford runs with the power of a much bigger back, especially once he makes it to the second level, and was highly efficient as a goal line back.
Despite his straight line speed, Langford is a long strider and lacks elite foot quickness hitting the hole out of the backfield. A tall back at 6-foot-0, he has a tendency to run too high, giving defenders a big target to hit. Landford seemed to prefer running defenders at Michigan State, which may not translate as well to the NFL for him as it did in college. Langford also seems to lack the instinct to make the best open field cuts, causing him to leave some yardage on the field.
Langford projects as a backup RB in the NFL, and perhaps even as a starter in the ideal situation. Having played special teams at Michigan State, he should be able to contribute for a team right away even if he's not a starter. While he is not quite quick enough to be a change of pace back, Langford may be best suited bulking up and becoming a full time between the tackles runner in the NFL given his running style in college, and projects as a 4th round draft pick.
