Week 13: Pickups of the Week
QB Chad Henne, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Henne delivered another solid line in his second start of the season this past weekend. Perhaps more importantly, he bought the Jaguars a small measure of self respect by helping to end a seven-game losing streak. Since taking over for Blaine Gabbert in Week 10, Henne has thrown for 736 yards while completing 57 per cent of his passes and matching seven touchdowns against two interceptions and zero fumbles. He has consistently been able to find his targets deep downfield and has helped ignite the play of Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts -- now two of the hottest receivers in football. Henne's matchup in Buffalo this week makes him a borderline top-10 play and there are some more soft opponents on the horizon including Miami, New England and a Week 17 rematch in Tennessee.
QB Colin Kaepernick, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
I can't think of another time a division-leading team made a change at QB this late in the season AND while having a healthy starter who boasts a top-five passer rating. It is hard not to feel bad for Alex Smith. His Week 10 concussion gave Kaepernick all the opportunity he needed to step in and Pipp the seven-year veteran. Since taking over as starter, Kaepernick has racked up three passing and two rushing touchdowns against only a single turnover. His passing has been just as sharp as Smith's, while his mobility and ability to improvise have given the San Francisco offense an added dimension. It looks like he's here to stay. With his next four games coming against the Rams, Dolphins, Patriots and Seahawks (who look likely to lose their two starting corners to PED suspensions), the schedule couldn't be kinder for Kaepernick's fantasy playoff run. Make sure this potential top-ten QB doesn't languish on your league's waiver wire.
RB Knowshon Moreno, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
It was Moreno, not Ronnie Hillman, who drew the surprise start in Willis McGahee's absence Sunday. And though we still consider Hillman to be the more explosive, higher upside player, Broncos coaches simply have more trust in Moreno right now. They gave him 20 of the team's 23 carries and he was the only RB targeted in the passing game, catching all four balls thrown his way. Moreno is still available in a majority of leagues. That will change quickly. This late in the season, it is a gift to be able to scoop a running back off the waiver wire that can give you 20+ carries a game.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Rodgers matched a season high with ten carries in Tampa, where he also scored his first rushing touchdown of the season. He was actually on the field for more snaps than starter Michael Turner, largely due to game flow and the pass-heavy nature of the contest. That may prove to be a one-time thing, but it reinforces the undeniable fact that Turner is no longer the be all, end all of the Falcons backfield. Long resistant to the time share model, Atlanta has embraced the platoon this year and will mix in heavy doses of Jacquizz Rodgers where necessary. Expect Rodgers' number to be called early and often against a New Orleans defense that allowed him to rush for 9.7 yards per carry in their last meeting.
RB Beanie Wells, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Wells wasted no time making an impact in his return to the field, scoring two first-half TDs before the game began to swing in St. Louis' favor. No other Arizona back had reached the endzone more than once in a game this year. Some believed La'Rod Stevens-Howling -- who had played well and scored in three of the past four games -- would steal carries from the not-yet-100 per cent Wells, but that was not the case on Sunday. Stevens-Howling was limited by rib injuries and saw only one carry and one missed target in the passing game. Wells was able to monopolize the backfield duties and should continue to be the work horse next week as he gets himself back into football shape. A major note of caution for those considering making the add: the Cardinals face a nightmare stretch against four of the league's toughest defenses over the next five games.
WR Davone Bess, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Davone Bess has usurped Brian Hartline as Miami's top possession receiver with more targets (44 to 40), catches (27 to 26), reception yards (327 to 293) and touchdowns (1 to 0) over the last five weeks. The role is a familiar one for Bess, who averaged an impressive 105 targets during the last two seasons while playing second fiddle to Brandon Marshall. Back in 2009, he was actually the Dolphins' leading receiver. Despite being a consistent pass magnet, Bess has never managed more than five touchdowns in a season. Like his teammate Hartline earlier this year, Bess is a strong PPR play but still a relatively weak play in most standard scoring formats. He does, however, deserve WR3/4 consideration against the forgiving Patriots secondary this Sunday.
WR Ryan Broyles, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Broyles was a hot pickup after it was announced that Titus Young had been suspended by the team for their Week 12 game against Houston. In what could turn out to be more than just a spot start, Broyles burned the Texans for 126 yards on six catches. The rookie ran sharp routes and drew praise from teammate Calvin Johnson, who told the Detroit News, "we are going to keep progressing with [Broyles and Mike Thomas] in our receiver group." Those comments seem to reinforce the suspicion that Young might find himself bumped out of a starting role when he returns to the lineup.
WR T.Y. Hilton, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
One of the year's top rookie performers, Hilton now has five scores (four receiving, one returning) in the last four weeks. On Sunday he was once again the difference-maker, accounting for both of his team's touchdowns. He has provided bursts of excitement thoughout this season, but had been anable to string together two solid performances in a row. Until now. It's a shame he's still stuck behind Donnie Avery on the depth chart. As the third option in a prolific Indianapolis passing attack, Hilton is a hit or miss fantasy commodity best suited for use in deeper leagues.
TE Dallas Clark, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
Week after week, Clark is becoming a more integral part of Tampa Bay's offensive plans. With 65 receiving yards last weekend, he exceeded the previous high he set in Week 11 and though he went scoreless, contributed when it mattered. Against Atlanta he caught every pass thrown his way, including the game's final completion. He could reward fantasy owners again this week against a Denver team that has struggled to defend opposing tight ends.
TE Dennis Pitta, ---
MyFantasyLeague availability: 100%FANTASY PROFILE / STATS & MORE
With six catches and a touchdown on Sunday, Pitta showed no ill effects from the concussion he suffered in Week 11. He wasn't able to sustain his early season dominance, but still bears consideration in 12-team leagues as a busy receiver and strong red zone target. He faces a tough challenge this week versus Pittsburgh, but draws Washington and Denver next -- the two teams that have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing tight ends this season. That could be a welcome boost for owners during the playoff stretch.
