Golf Rankings for Waste Management Phoenix Open
We have only one course this week, which is nice. It's the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Stadium Course is a par-71 course that runs 7,266 yards. The greens are Bermudagrass and not poa annua like we had last week. The course went through some major renovations two years ago, but the changes didn't seem to have an effect on the golfers last year so we won't focus much on those changes.
The field should be able to score this week unlike last week and we should see the winner close to 20-under par. The field is also a bit smaller than usual with only 132 golfers as opposed to the maximum 156 we see in full field events.
The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has been the host since 1987. So, we have solid course history to go on again this week. Also, we don't see much of a debut penalty so those golfers making their first trip here shouldn't be ignored.
The stats aren't quite as easy to pick out this week, so we'll lean on stats a little bit less than we did last week. Current form and course history will be pretty important this week.
Driving Distance (DD) rears its beautiful head again this week though not with the same impact as last week. It won't be quite as important, but looking at recent leader boards you see many long drivers there. And this week, Greens in Regulation Percentage (GIR%) gains some importance as we need to be able to get to the green to score.
We'll see winning scores in the upper teens unlike last week and the historical record shows you can get there by doing well on par 3s or par 4s or par 5s. You don't need to specialize. You just need to score so we'll also peruse Birdie or Better Percentage (BOB%).
We're still looking at last season's stats to start, but we are using the current season's stats to look at players who have improved over last year and could be hidden gems.
And of course, we examine Strokes Gained: Putting and Strokes Gained: Tee to Green each week.
Finally, the weather looks just fine this week so we shouldn't have a repeat of last Sunday.
