A Draft Amongst Friends
This past weekend I did a real draft with some friends for a league, and I thought I would share it and some comments. These are just some average guys. Perhaps you can use the results for your research since most of you can relate to these picks over the experts' mocks you've been studying recently to prepare for your draft.
This is a 10 owner league with 16 draft rounds. The league starts 8 players (1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Defense) and has the basic scoring setup (1 point per 25 yards passing / 1 point per 10 yards rushing & receiving), except all touchdowns are worth 6 points and you get a half a point for each reception.
ROUND 1
1= RB Adrian Petersen
2= RB Michael Turner
3= RB Matt Forte
4= RB Maurice Jones-Drew
5= RB DeAngelo Williams
6= RB Brian Westbrook
7= RB Steven Jackson
8= RB Frank Gore
9= RB Brandon Jacobs
10= RB Ladainian Tomlinson
Comments:
As you can see, all RBs went every pick here in the first round. LT falling to #10 has to do with concerns for his age (and Darren Sproles' rise), and Westbrook going in the first round this early was a huge surprise considering his injury history.
ROUND 2
11= QB Tom Brady
12= RB Clinton Portis
13= RB Chris Johnson
14= RB Marion Barber
15= RB Steve Slaton
16= RB Ryan Grant
17= QB Drew Brees
18= WR Larry Fitzgerald
19= WR Andre Johnson
20= RB Ronnie Brown
Comments:
Brady going before Brees was a small surprise, but one could argue that is a very close comparison; however, Brees falling all the way to #17 was a shock as I truly expected one of these guys to take him in round 1. Clinton Portis has to be the huge reach here at #12 (and so was Ryan Grant at #16). The steal of the round was RB Chris Johnson falling to #13 as I think he should have gone in the first round (and really thought Fitzgerald would have gone higher also).
ROUND 3
21= WR Reggie Wayne
22= QB Peyton Manning
23= WR Randy Moss
24= RB Kevin Smith
25= WR Steve Smith
26= WR Greg Jennings
27= WR Terrell Owens
28= WR Roddy White
29= WR Anthony Gonzalez
30= RB Larry Johnson
Comments:
Mostly WRs went in this round. I thought Kevin Smith going at #24 was too high with all those receivers still on the board. This is probably the earliest I have seen Larry Johnson go in a draft, and WR Anthony Gonzalez probably was a reach at this point.
