Week 1: Beyond the Box Score
Green Bay 16 - Seattle 36
Did you hear any "KUUUHN" chants during Thursday night's game? John Kuhn had the lone rushing score for the Packers. Eddie Lacy ran 12 times for 34 yards before leaving early in the fourth quarter due to a concussion. It's notable that James Starks had a respectable seven touches compared to Lacy's 15 prior to the concussion. Watch this split going forward.
Marshawn Lynch put all durability concerns to rest with his 20-carry, 110-yard, two-TD performance. You will probably have to wait at least another year for Robert Turbin or Christine Michael to break out.
If you're still skeptical of Percy Harvin, you shouldn't be. He had seven receptions for 59 yards and four rushes for 41 yards.
San Francisco 28 - Dallas 17
What regression from Vernon Davis? He lit up Dallas' defense, which left him basically uncovered for two easy touchdowns.
We finally got to see some glimpses of Carlos Hyde. Let's hold the horses on calling for Frank Gore to retire, but Hyde did rush seven times for 50 yards and a TD. He looked like the next big thing in the 49ers' backfield.
Entering Monday, Tony Romo is tied for the league lead with three interceptions. He was terrible but still managed 281 yards and a garbage-time touchdown to WR Terrance Williams. It was the lone TD from this receiving corps.
New Orleans 34 - Atlanta 37
Brandin Cooks. Just … wow. The much-hyped rookie lived up to the expectations, compiling seven receptions on eight targets for 77 and a touchdown. The Saints also gave the versatile receiver a carry that went for 18 yards.
Mark Ingram was the clear leader of the Saints' RBBC and responded with 13 rushes for 60 yards and two touchdowns. You can feel free to start him as your RB2.
Let's have a show of hands of who thought Matt Ryan would be the best fantasy quarterback on Sunday. Ryan put up 448 passing yards, three TDs and no interceptions. In fact, he had almost 80 more passing yards than any QB.
St. Louis 6 - Minnesota 34
The Rams were the only team that didn't score a touchdown Sunday. Quarterback Shaun Hill got injured and was replaced by Austin Davis. Who? It's best to stay away from this team.
Cordarrelle Patterson had more rushing yards, 102, than Adrian Peterson, 75. Patterson also had three receptions for 26 yards and scored the only touchdown between the two players. Patterson's oft-criticized ADP seems well worth it.
Cleveland 27 - Pittsburgh 30
Ben Tate got injured in the second quarter (who didn't see that coming?) and was replaced by a committee of Terrance West, who rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries, and Isaiah Crowell, who rushed only 5 times for 32 yards but scored twice.
Everyone should believe in Antonio Brown. He burned Joe Haden again, finishing with a 5/116/1 line. Also, smoking pot may have given Le'Veon Bell special abilities. He rushed for 109 yards and a score on 21 carries and tacked on six receptions for 88 yards. He was the best fantasy RB this weekend.
Jacksonville 17 - Philadelphia 34
Zach Ertz began his breakout season with three receptions for 77 yards and a TD.
The real story of this game was undrafted rookie WR Allen Hurns, who created some buzz with a strong preseason and got the start versus the Eagles in place of the injured Cecil Shorts. He then totaled 110 receiving yards and two first-quarter TDs. He is a must-grab if he is still on your waiver wire.
Oakland 14 - New York 19
Rookie Derek Carr was pegged as a sleeper option for Week 1. He didn't have a break-out game but was respectable against a stingy Jets defense. He threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory showed they can easily complement each other and potentially be the best backfield tandem this year. Ivory gained 102 yards, scored a touchdown and averaged more than 10 yards per carry. Johnson touched the ball 18 times for 91 total yards.
Cincinnati 23 - Baltimore 16
A.J. Green did A.J. Green things, putting up a 6/131/1 line while dominating the Ravens' defense. He's still a clear-cut WR1 and will be for a while.
Bernard Pierce rushed only six times for 14 yards before being benched for fumbling. He was replaced by Justin Forsett, who gained 84 total yards and a TD. He had 16 touches, including five receptions. However, the starter for Thursday's game versus the Steelers is undecided.
Buffalo 23 - Chicago 20
Surprisingly, E.J. Manuel had a semi-decent game as he managed the Bills' offense, going 16-of-22 for 173 yards with a TD and an INT.
In another surprise, TE Martellus Bennett turned in a big fantasy line with eight receptions for 70 yards and a score. Of course, that day probably wouldn't have happened if Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery hadn't missed snaps due to injury.
Washington 6 - Houston 17
Washington's lone TD of the game came from RB Darrel Young. Then the extra point was blocked. That pretty much sums up the Redskins' offense.
Arian Foster ran for more than 100 yards on 27 carries … and didn't get hurt. He'll be in for a big workload if he can stay healthy.
Tennessee 26 - Kansas City 10
As predicted by most of the football community, Shonn Greene (15 carries) and Dexter McCluster (nine carries, one reception) both ran ahead of rookie Bishop Sankey (six carries). It may be best to avoid this situation until strict duties are figured out.
The Chiefs left some people scratching their head as they gave Jamaal Charles only seven carries, which he turned into 19 yards. Maybe those offensive line concerns weren't overstated in the offseason.
TE Anthony Fasano got the only receiving touchdown for the Chiefs, but TE Travis Kelce had 20 more yards on the same amount of receptions (three).
New England 20 - Miami 33
Rob Gronkowski finally came back, and it was beautiful. He was targeted a team-high 11 times, caught four passes for 40 yards and scored the Pats' lone receiving TD.
Lamar Millerstarted the game but fumbled in the second quarter, which led to a majority of the carries going to Knowshon Moreno. He rushed 24 times for 134 yards compared to Miller, who rushed for 59 yards on 11 carries. Each of them scored a touchdown.
Carolina 20 - Tampa Bay 14
Here's another rookie who lived up to his hype. Kelvin Benjamin went off for a 6/92/1 line. If he can do this with QB Derek Anderson, imagine what he'll be able to do when Cam Newton returns from injury.
Doug Martin suffered a knee injury and missed most of the fourth quarter. To make matters worse, he hardly did anything before his injury, putting up 9 yards on nine carries. Yes, you read that right. Bobby Rainey replaced him and although he tallied a receiving touchdown, he also lost a fumble with less than two minutes remaining that basically sealed the Bucs' fate. Be on the lookout for injury updates on Martin this week.
Indianapolis 24 - Denver 31
Julius Thomas was the highest-scoring tight end of the weekend, putting up three touchdowns and 104 yards on seven receptions. It's like the Colts' defense wasn't even covering him.
Trent Richardson struggled again, rushing six times for 20 yards. Ahmad Bradshaw saw an increased workload as the game went on and gained 34 more total yards than Richardson on one fewer touch.
