Chargers RB Mike Tolbert will sign free-agent tender Friday

So at the same that Vincent Jackson is signing his franchise tag Friday, one of his teammates will also be signing to a one-year deal with the hopes that an extension can be worked out. San Diego Chargers running back Mike Tolbert @miketolbert35 will sign his restricted free-agent tender tomorrow, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The tender is worth $1.835 million. The Union-Tribune also wrote that Tolbert and the team could begin negotiations on a long-term deal at some point this season.

Fantasy Analysis:

Tolbert was never expected to leave San Diego, but the fact that he is back is bad news for Ryan Mathews @rmathews24. True, the Chargers are preparing Mathews to be the lead running back. But head coach Norv Turner believes that he is a running a two-RB system. That means a lot of the same from 2010 -- Mathews doing most of the work when healthy, but likely coming off the field in short-yardage and goal-line packages. If Mathews misses considerable game time, much like he did last year, Tolbert will have even more value. In two games that Mathews missed due to injury last season -- week 11 versus Denver and week 12 versus Indianapolis -- Tolbert ran for at least 100 yards and a touchdown.
