Bills looking to add QBs, but only backups
The Buffalo Bills' overall quarterback rating last season was 75.2, seventh-worst in the NFL. They didn't use any of their nine draft picks on a QB, and the lockout has kept them from adding to their roster. With only Ryan Fitzpatrick and Levi Brown on the current QB depth chart, general manager Buddy Nix wants to pick up two more quarterbacks. But apparently none of them will test Fitzpatrick for the starting job. Nix wants him to stay right there. "We're going to try to get a veteran in free agency that can back up Fitz, and in case he gets hurt, he can finish a game or he can start a game and give us a chance to win," Nix said. "We like our quarterback. We think Fitz is a smart guy, he's a tough guy. He threw for 3,000 yards and had a really good year. Our players believe in him. He's a leader for us, so he's our quarterback." Fitzpatrick threw for 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns in 13 starts last season. He registered a 81.8 QB rating.
Fantasy Analysis:
There was a four-week period during last season when Fitzpatrick looked like a top-level fantasy quarterback. From weeks 3-7, Fitzpatrick threw 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. Then he turned into the Ryan Fitzpatrick we've come to expect as the season finished, throwing five touchdowns next to 11 turnovers in his final five games. Fitz can pay big dividends for fantasy owners when given the right matchup. But he's not someone you want to rely on every week. In other words, don't do what the Bills are poised to do with him.
